We&#039;ve tried to prepare our kids  for things like this, without making them cynical or overly suspicious.  But I guess you can never REALLY prepare them -- he was pretty shocked.  In an ironic way, it helped  that there were so many other kids who had been turned away.  As I mentioned, many of them knew each other from sports, and they ended up talking together and comparing stories -- it was a kind of  impromptu solidarity that took place in the  face of a pretty ugly situation.</description>
